Experienced Rowers

University College Boat Club is privileged to have access to substantial endowments and generous support by alumni, which gives our experienced rowers unrivalled oppportunities to reach their full potential.

  1. We are one of the most competitive Oxford/Cambridge rowing clubs. The Men's and Women's First VIIIs are currently 11th and 4th on the River in Summer Eights regatta respectively. Nationally, the Women are placed 56th in the Women's Head of the River and the Men are in the top 100 in the Head of the River race.

  2. Boathouse: We are fortunate enough to train at our own multi million pound boathouse, built in 2007, which has 3 world class boat bays and indoor rowing room plus an amazing club room. An award-winning multi-million pound building, it was opened by Colin Moynihan (1974), who coxed for University College and Oxford University, won a silver medal at the Moscow Olympics in 1980, later became Minister of Sport, and then Chairman of the British Olympic Association. Having been awarded a Royal Institute of British Architects award, our boathouse is an unique and recognised icon among boathouses in Oxford and nationally.

  3. Boats, Facilities and Coaches: Within the boathouse, our fleet is one of the largest and most modern among any Oxford college. Containing modern boats of every class, it includes three brand new Empacher eights. We don't have one gym but two! Our gym at the boathouse, boasts eight Concept 2 Model Ds which are typically kept on sliders. Meanwhile we also have a weights gym in the college itself, which is full of free standing wights. Our members also have unlimited free access to all the training facilities of the University Sports Complex on Iffley Road. With our endowment we are also privileged to recruit the highest quality coaches to help our top crews reach their full potential.

  4. Exclusive Training Lake Access at Caversham: Our 1st VIII crews have unrivalled access to locations for water outings, including exclusive access to the Redgrave Pinsent Rowing Lake in Caversham, being the only college in Oxford or Cambridge granted access. Caversham's first-class lake and facilities are used only by the GB squad, the University Blues squad and ourselves, University College Boat Club. We also train regularly at Eton Dorney, Abingdon, Swindon and Radley to escape the congestion of the Isis in Oxford.

  5. Financial Support: The club and College are determined that financial considerations should never be a factor in participation. We are committed to providing our rowers the support they need, and University College provides additional generous grants to athletes awarded Blues and Half-Blues, including in Men and Women’s Heavyweight and Lightweight rowing.
